I'm looking for recommendations on some 5/8's inch metal lathe tools. I'm just looking for something to play with at the moment, but I don't see much out there in 5/8 inch size tools.

The holder I have is 5/8 inch wide and can go up to 5/8 inch tall.

You need to be more specific on what kind of tools you are talking about.
Otherwise, most reccomendations would be about the same as you would get when asking about any turning tools. Higher price generally gets better quality. But, there are bargains out there at lower prices also. Depends on what you need/want and can spend.

metal lathe cutting tools that are 5/8th inch wide and no more than 5/8 inch tall where they fit in the holder?

Something like the seven piece set at the top of this page maybe, but I don't want to spend $80 on a set of 7 just to find that they won't work for my purpose.

I'd like to find one or two to play with before investing a bunch of money.

I like the price on the ones on the left, but they don't come in the 5/8th size I need.

i just looked at 5/8" tool blanks (where you can cut/grind to the shape you want) - these things are expensive....5/8 x 5/8 x 4 1/2 is a minimun of $25 each......this is onn mcmaster.com page 2464.......seeing that....$80 for a set of 7 doesn't sound bad....JMTCW

maybe I can just get some 1/8 inch shim material and use a couple 1/2 inchers until I figure out if it will work.

I don't have a problem with the $80 for 7, but I won't be able to use all seven. More likely just 3 or 4. I do like the fact that the cutters themselves are replaceable though.

Try Enco Tools. They have some 5/8 blanks that you will need to grind for about $6 each. If you have a bench grinder, its not too difficult to get something that will cut pen materials.

You say it can "go up to", but what tool will fit to place it on center? What kind of tool holder do you have? What kind of lathe are you using, that's a pretty big cutter! I mean, seriously... that's over 1/2" cutters! Do you have a QCTP that will allow you to set the tool on center with a smaller bit?

I will echo Enco... Great place to buy from and is where I get all my tooling. and if you want pre-made carbide, they have them for about $10.00 (see 317-5023)

Mike I'll also suggest Enco, but, a 5/8 hss tool takes a lot longer to grind than a 3/8, what size lathe do you have, My 9x20 jet has a slot that's 1 inch wide 4 way tool holder, no QCTP it actually sets up near dead center with 1/2 inch tools, depending on how they are ground, I use 3/8 tool holders for my carbide and shim under the cutters, remember the cutting point of the tool has to be real close to center of the material.
