Each piece has it's own story of how they came to be:

We'll start off with a handmade cradle gifted to me from Bill Sampson here on IAP. Bill and I became good friends through IAP and later on in person after I drove up to Virginia for their pen turners meeting. Bill made this cradle many years ago and upon hearing of me and my wife having our first baby he called me up saying it's ours. Bill then took it apart and refinished each piece and put it all back together. Oh, I forgot to mention it's entirely made of Cherry. I recently made the drive up to VA to pick it up and got to see it in person and got to spend part of the afternoon with Bill. WOW is it beautiful! These pictures were taken by him. It's truely a piece of art and will be cherished by our family and for generations to come! Thank you so much Bill. Words cannot being to show my appreciation

Next is an oil painting done by my lovely wife Shea. She's been out from work on maternity for a couple of weeks now. Well, she's usually a VERY active person and that's mainly outdoors riding her horses. Well, with the baby she can't do all that so she's been stuck in the house and VERY VERY bored. Since I also work from home (when my back isn't making me want to jump off a bridge!) we now spend much more time together than we normally would. So, I told her she needed an indoor hobby so we wouldn't end up at each other's throat. Hence I persuaded her to get back into doing some painting. She agreed and here's her first finished piece that we got back from the framers today:

Last is a pen and ink drawing done by IAP member Shawn Newton (aka: Watch_Art). Way back when he first joined the forum he put up an offer of a pen and ink drawing in exchange for finished fountain pens. Well I contacted him about a custom piece of my wife riding her lifelong friend and horse Buck. Well...as you all know by now Shawn started turning his own FP's and so we changed the deal into the drawing for pen blanks. I still sent him a couple custom FP's to give to the students though. We also just got this back from the framers today. We went with hunter green and gold matting because when Shea was eventing/showing Buck his colors were the same. I'm including the original picture that I scanned for Shawn to work with and he absolutely nailed it! You're an amazing artist Shawn and we can't thank you enough. When we get our new house this is going over the mantle on the fireplace. I'll be sure to send you a pic when we get there. Thank you again so much!

Well that's just amazing Jonathon! Bill is an amazing guy and this just shows how generous this community is on the IAP. Really a big family taking care of each other. Both you and Shea have a real talent and I'm sure that talent will be picked up by the little one in no time. What can you say about Shawn...that's amazing work! Really captures the energy of the original image. You're blessed to have such an amazing extended family out here Jonathon. Best wishes my friend

That's some amazing stuff for just one thread. Bill is quite a guy and always generous. He's the reason the Richmond group keeps going. The rest of the art is beautiful as well. Good luck with the new baby and new house - and look forward to seeing you at the MAPG.

Waaaay  !!!!
Love the crib, the painting by your wife is wonderful & the line drawing is really great, all that AND you can make way cool pen blanks too! Superb on all fronts.

Having seen this cradle in person, I can say the pictures don't do it justice! This was gorgeous! Great work Bill!

Congrats Jonathon on the paintings and drawings! I had no idea that Shea was a painter! I like all of them!

Hope the back starts to feel better and you can start to move easier than when you were at my place!

Hey there everyone, Thank you all so much for your comments on my painting. As the time gets closer to either moving or baby arriving (they may happen at the same time) I'm getting more and more stir crazy. I'm now only allowed to feed the horses and pet them occationally. NOT okay for this horse crazy girl. Jonathon has been wonderful and totally supportive.
I wanted to say a HUGE thank you to Bill and Shawn for their wonderful creations both of which will take center stage in our home.
I'm forever amazed at the kindness and generosity of the amazingly talented folks on this forum. You have all become like an extended family to us and for that we are grateful.

:) You can always take up block printing. I'd use blick water based printing inks to avoid the stink of the oil based inks and thinner for clean up. It's a lot of fun.

Jonathon and Shea,
I am pleased that you are happy with the cradle. When I built it some time ago, we anticipated our grandchildren would use it. Unfortunately, they never came, so the cradle sat, covered in a closet. When Jonathon came to our home, and we heard of your first child coming, Sam, (my wife) suggested it was time for the cradle to be useful, and the rest is history.
Isn't it amazing how friendships develop on the IAP?

Shea and Shawn,
Your art work is beautiful. I am envious of people with creative skills that can produce pictures of your work as shown in this post. I build from plans, and have difficulty visualizing the finished product. It is obvious you both have been given a wonderful talent not many enjoy.

Bill Sampson
