I have a friend who sells new homes for a builder. I gave him a pen for his birthday and he looked at it and thought out loud, those would be awesome gifts to give someone when they come to sign the final papers on a new home.

My question to all is, if you were to suggest something that I could make for him to give as a gift, what would it be. I am wondering, as a BUYER, what would you think was most awesome to get the day you spend hundreds of thousands of dollar?

We got busy and did not talk about it any further, but I would love to go to him with a suggestion. I thought about a cast of his company logo, but as I have not done anything like that, I am hesitant to suggest. I thought about having something engraved, but thinking it might be better to add the cost of the engraving into either the blank or the pen kit.

I welcome any and all ideas.

The title company I used provided the pen for signing the documents. They had pens already made up with their company name and logos already printed on them from a company that supplies that type of Advertising. It will depend on whether or not the Realty company has an in house title company or they use a bank etc. The pen s were pretty good quality. Its still worth pursuing if your friend wanted to make an additional statement.
 
I would actually recommend a very nice rollerball in that extra special burl wood or maybe a blank by Brooks, in a nice box with the box laser engraved with a home on it or "COngratulations" It would be hard to put the date on them until after closing because so many get delayed. Depending on the sale prices of homes your friend may or may not want to go that route. Here the listing fees/commisions are split between Brokers if its not sold by the listing broker and depending on the Company the selling agents may only get a percentage of that.
 
I personally wouldn't want a pen with any type of advertizing on it. Not if I am going to keep it and use it.

HOWEVER, making a beautiful pen and enclosing it in an engraved box would be better in my opinion. The box could have anything engraved on it from "Thank you" to "Congratulations" to the company logo.

One local realtor here gets a 'name sign' made by me for any buyer that spends "X" amoutn of dollars. The sign has just their name and some simple design. They remember where that sign came from and then with their next house, they have her name in mind, right off the bat. Best thing is that the sign can be moved with them.

It is a one of a kind,"Welcome home" present.
 
I sort of agree about the logo on the pen, and think maybe on the box might be a better idea. I know the builder has their own pen that is a nice enough pen, but he is one of those guys who always wants to go the extra mile for his customers.

My friend was concerned about the number of homes he sells a year and it being overwhelming for me to make that many pens. But if I were to use materials from the actual construction, they would be spread out over the entire year.

I can also hear the statement when all the papers are signed, using that pen. You are now holding the first small portion of your home in your hand.

And then to have a nice wooden box engraved with a discreet logo inside of it. I am liking this thought process
 
Pen or S&P shakers made from kitchen cabinet or counter top material used in the new house , plain wood is fine , doesn/t have to have figure . No engraving , because pen gets taken to weekly bridge game or whatever , shown proudly \ Look what my realtor gave me when we bought the house \ , which would not happen if the realtors name were on it , and might not if the customers name is on it . S&P shakers get used on the dining room table , shown to and used by guests .

Pepper mill might be even better , although you would probably have to use material from somewhere other than the kitchen\dining area .
 
I've been a realtor for over 35 years. In the beginning I handed buyers an advertising pen to sign their closing papers with. About 50% left them on the table. For the longest time after I ran out off those pens I just sent them a plant. In 1982 I moved into commercial real estate on a part time basis. Only 2-3 deals a year. I use a well known roller ball with my business card inside the pen case with a bottle of Johnny Blue as the gift. The funny thing is its delivered by courier as most commercial closings today are done via internet, phone, and courier. I would believe the Pen in the Box with Business Card to be the way to go. As I get better turning a nice dark burl pen is what I'm going to make.

Oh and if your friend is selling so many houses in a year that you could not keep up wih the pen demands, please let us know where he lives, I am moving there.
 
It's more work but if you can get something that's specific to the home that build it would be more meaningful. For example, use scraps from the kitchen cabinets, or flooring, or corian countertops, etc
 
I have asked my friend for ideas and didnt get anything definitive, so I thought, who better to ask than this awesome group of people! :)

He sells about 80 homes a year, so not like it would monopolize my time, but it is pretty significant in this area.

I think making them with some scraps from the house is a wonderful idea. I wish they used Corian more, but most homes these days they use granite. And painted trim, but I bet I can find something to use. :)
 
Whenever I rehab a house, I always save a piece of wood and make a pen for the husband and wife when the job is over. Most of the houses are c1880 but even old pine looks like pine. If you can get a piece of the flooring (if they actually use 3/4 t&G) and put some pine scallops in it, you'll have a really sharp looking pen for them. If all you can get is construction pine, dye some of it and put in some colored scallops. Grab a piece of the flashing and you can offset the scallops with metal.
