A friend at work his brother works at a warehouse they have plumbing & HVAC supplies. I asked him the price of a 1/2 hp motor He told me I could get a 1/2 hp 1725 rpm direct drive motor for $66 includes tax. I was wondering how difficult would it be to add a variable speed switch? This is for a buffing motor for turnings.

I want to say it can't be done, someone may prove me wrong. This is the same size motor I use for buffing using both the Beall 8" buffs and their round bowl buffs. I find the the speed works great for both.

To do it economically, you need either a DC motor or a universal AC motor.(the one with brushes) Almost certainly, the motor you would be getting from the warehouse would "NOT" be of the required type.

I say no. Beall recommends 1725 for their 8" buffs. For their smaller bowl buffs or goblet buffs they recommend 3250. It is the surface speed that is needed. Myself I find the 1725 works good for all my Beall buffs. I almost think the 3250 would be scary fast.Try your setup I think you will like it.
