Hello again all I have a Question about a Lathe that I found on craigslist. I found a Jet Model 1014 used for 180.00 is that a good price? They say it has not been used hard, but it is a cash only sale and I have not seen pictures of it. Thank you to all of you for the help, I been asking a lot of Questions and have not had anyone give me a rude answer so far. Thanks again... Len Shreck

I have 3 wood lathes and 2 metal lathes, I am a lathe junkie. I would look at this one and if it looked like it had not been abused it would be going home with me. If it runs and the motor does not overheat and the headstock bearings do not get hot and there is nothing that says it was mistreated it is a good price.

Len -- I have the 1014 variable speed and paid a good bit more that $180. I do not suggest getitng hardware via pictures, especially used and potentailly abused equipment. Kind of like purchasing used mules.

You can look at a few key featues and get a good view of the gear - This one is probably the manual - change the belts to change the speed. It could be good value or an opportunity to pay more.

is the bed showing signs of wear? Lots of rust and crud??

Does the motor run and the whole thing run without loud noises, sqeeks, buzzes etc?

Live center, spur drive, knockout bar, etc all there or a deduct?

headstock threads in clean sharp shape? Face plate is in good condition.

Stand come with it? Tools part of the package?? How do the tools look --

Thanks Dogcatcher, I was thinking it was a pretty good price but wasnt sure. Now if I could get the guy to send me some pics I would be a happy camper.

I just talked to the guy that has this Lathe here is what I found out please give me your opinion with these taken into consideration: Lathe is about 6 yrs old but had a new motor put on it and that motor has about 4 hrs on it. Lathe only comes with Spur Drive, it is the shifting of belts to change speeds, it is the White model not the Grey whatever that means. The lathe comes with either a 7" or 9" adjustable tool rest the guy couldn't remember which one it was. The gentlemen that owns this lathe is older he made his living woodworking it paid for his daughter's college and also a nice Motor home that him and his wife will be traveling in this is why he is selling this lathe. He is sending me some pictures in a little while. All that being said what do you think? Thanks Len Shreck

I talked to the guy again here is the updates he will give it to me for 150.00 and it comes on a movable stand it also comes 15 blank 6" square and 9" long that are from an old Cherry tree that a storm knocked down in his yard. I do not know how to attach pic or I would put one in here so you can see it setting on the stand. Len

I have 3 pics he sent me from what I see on the pics you can tell he used it but it dont look like it is abused no paint chipping, no rusting or stuff like that. If I knew how to attach a pic I would post one on here

I just picked one up for $150... felt this was a good price. Jump on it if it is in good shape. (new motor makes me a bit nervous though... what happened to the old one?). Check the bearings and belt for wear. Looking forward to seeing your new lathe. (to post pics, click on the manage attachments button or the icon at the top of the "quick reply" that looks like a mountain with a sun.

Here are the pictures I got...

OK all I am trying to add the pictures of the lathe. The last one, Jet Lathe 3, is with the stand that comes with the Lathe and as I said it comes with 15 6"x6"x9" Cherry Blanks. He also changed the price from 180.00 to 150.00 so what do you think? I like it but the problem is it is 3 hrs away drive time. Please all give me your opinion. Thanks Len

I'd buy it and leave the stand... :)
On second thought, I'd buy it and take the stand and them make a new one when I could.

The 3 hours of driving puts a different view on it. That adds considerable cost in gas and wear and tear on your vehicle, all added to the cost of a bargain which makes it less of a bargain.

I bought it got home last night about 830 I guess. When I got there I checked it all out he said the old motor was just worn out, It worked but just didnt have the power it was to have. While I was there we were talking and he threw in a bench top "Central Industries" drill press so that sweetened the deal. I also got the cherry wood its not 6"x6"x9" Blanks, it is chunks cut from the tree that vary in sizes some are about 6" round by about 6" deep and some are somewhat bigger then that, I dont know what I am going to do with them yet I may sell them or trade them or I may just keep them and try to make some Cherry bowls I am not sure yet they are all debarked and have been in a loft for better then 2 yrs so they should be OK to use I guess. Len, Looks like you got a good deal to me. Hard to say without actually being bale to move stuff around and see how it feels but if it runs as good as it looks you did good.
nice rest on it. you could probably talk to Rick (rherrell here at IAP) about other rests to fit that post. since the post is the expensive part you will get a great deal through him. I just spent $65.00 on a post and 3 rests for my lathe.
Looks like you will have a couple of other costs right out the door as well. 60 degree live center but you can get those at a great price from Johnnycnc. then you will have all your usual costs of penturning like your mandrel. that should get you through a pen or two. then you can start thinking about all the other neat little gadgets you can put on it.

I wasm just looking at prices for a 60 degree live center. At PSI they are 20.00 before shipping I am going to look around some. I am waiting for auctions to finish on E-Bay I bid on a Mandrel and drill bit set on there all in one for 17 and change I hope it is worth it. Len

That tool rest post can have other rests put on it the rest its self screws off and you can screw others on I have no idea where to find them until I look around. The drill press is an S-987 Model from Central Ind. it is a variable speed so that should be good enough for now. Len

Get your live center from johnnycnc. Good price and good quality. Look on CL for tool rests. You can also get them from Rockler for a reasonable price. looks like you got a good deal.
