I was thinking of getting wife one of these

she travels a lot.

Can it play movies. Can she listen not read audio books? Do I have to have a mac computer to load and update or install things on the device?

I bought an I-Pod Touch a few months ago. It can be viewed as somewhere between an I-Pad Light, and an I-Phone without the phone.

Yes, it can play movies. It doesn't have a CD or DVD drive, so the ability to hold a move is dependent on the amount of memory you purchase. Likewise e-books (both audio and text) and music.

I do not have a Mac - I have ITunes on my PC and use that for content management.

The IPod Touch gives me the ability to access the internet via free Wifi, send and receive e-mail, listen to music, maintain both a calendar and a contacts directory that are synched to siblings on my desktop computer, listen to music, and play a few games. And it fits in my pocket.

Do I have to have a mac computer to load and update or install things on the device? No, windows based pcs work fine too, and if she is getting them from iTunes no pc is nessecary
 
I believe the last generation doesn't need a pc at all, even updates are done through wifi. Although I can't remember if that's for the new iPhone 4s alone or also for the iPad 2.
 
iPads with iOS version 5 can do without iTunes on a PC.
There may still be iPads in the supply chain with v4 on them..
You have to have iTunes to do the upgrade to 5.

If you want to load music from a personal library that has been copied from CD you would still want to have iTunes on the pc.
Also if you want to do a local backup of your iPad vs to Apple's cloud you would use iTunes.

You could do both those things with a little less, but it would likely be a smaller screen too... with a 10" screen, the competitors aren't saving you much and the iPad is the clear market winner.

We have one now and my wife uses it for almost ALL her web browsing as well as movies, etc. She rarely uses the PC at all any more.

Both my Wife and I have iPads, and we love them! Yes movies, and it has a wonderful bright screen or that! Yes audio books, I use blutooth headphones when I listen. I have iTunes on a Windows PC and it works just fine with these iPads. I don't have any problem moving music and movies to the iPad through iTunes, and VLC has a nice video viewing app that plays most formats. You could buy something less, but then you'd have something . . . Less!

ok, thanks, will get the ipad then. I'm not a fan of buying something twice over cause the first thing wasn't good enough. If you buy something and then replace it, you spend more than just buying the right thing in the first place. Just like buying tools.

You could buy two Amazon Kindle Fire's and still be less than the one ONLY from Apple iPad.
 
maybe you can buy 3 kindles..once you calculate the accessories and model you choose and taxes, dang..cost almost double what it says it is! I went with 32gb wifi and mobil, keyboard, headphones, leather case and warranty package. I must love the ole lady!
 
I have never been a fan of Apple products, but I finally broke down and purchased the IPAD 2 for my B'Day...after having this gadget for a few months now, don't see how I could ever do without it...might even consider having it permanently attached if it were possible :)
 
Blackerry is clearing their "Playbook" for $199.00 CAD. Next to an I-pad, I'd say that it's a good price for a tablet. Just a thought in case you wanted to stretch your dollar a bit.
 
Of course, Blackberry has a questionable future.

My vote is to go with the ipad simply because it can do so much more than it's competitors. Even if you don't need the additional functionality, you might in the future. (You might even need it in the super near term once you get to using it and realizing all that it can do.)

Like others, I am not an apple person. I'm a PC guy. When people started buying ipods, I ended up with an (awesome) iRiver H320. That purchase reinforced my anti-apple attitude. I have long been an 'organizer' guy and jumped from Day-Timers to Palm pdas pretty early on. I went through a number of them and was pretty pleased, until Microsoft Vista came around. All the sudden, I was having tons of sync problems. This pushed me to a change that I never expected to make. I moved on to an ipod touch.

All of the sudden, I could watch movies on a screen over twice as large as my H320. I had apps that could do everything that my palm would do and tons more. I could actually get online.

A couple weeks ago, my wife, the blackberry user, replaced her phone with an iphone 4s. While she is not over the transition angst, she is definitely loving the new tool. I can tell that she likes it because she has dusted off the ipad 2 and the Macbook Pro that have gone unused since she got them a year and two ago.

My iphone should be to me in a week or so.
 
I bought an Ipad when they first came out and have used it almost daily since. If I can't find it then my wife has it. I have the 64gb and have found that 32gb would probably have been sufficient. Great for movies and I do most of my browsing of the internet on it. Tons of free apps are available.
 
Re movies - the iTunes rentals/purchases can be pricey. I get the Netflix streaming service for $8/mo and can watch at home (thru my blu-ray player, my appleTV box, or on my PC) or on my iPod Touch wherever there's a wifi connection.
