Here are the photographs showing how I incorporate purfling into a blank.

Pictures are wonderful Alan. I may go back and try your method. I tried this before, but never got the precision I wanted. The variety of the purfling is impressive, and would be much easier than the way I construct my chevrons.

Great innovation!

Thanks Alan. I'm not sure what the second picture is showing. I'm amazed that you went all the way to the tube, seems like it would fall apart.

I guess your next challenge is to make your own purfling!

Steve, I can only cut so far with the slot cutter without the risk of touching the tube, so I finish the slots with a rasp on my Dremel as shown in the second picture. The blanks are epoxied onto the tube so there is little chance of it coming apart.
The reason for using the purfling was that I was fed up CA glueing all those wee bits together ( and my fingers)

Why do you need to go all the way to the tube? Doesn't the slot just need to be below the level of the final pen diameter?

Hello Eric.
Because the purfling material is only 2.5mm thick I know how much thickness I have to play with.
I cut right through a number of these that werent taken right down to the tube early on.
Also if the blank is not drilled 100% down the centre then cutting down to the tube guarantees the purfling is placed correctly.
I hope that makes sense.....it's been a long day.
