Does anyone have one that can provide me with advice? It didn't come with instructions, however, based on the pictures on the box it looked like a simple set up.

Wrong:(

I aligned the solid back aluminium with the blade, then inserted the brass tube. This method results in the blank being 1/8 too short.

I don't know how it is supposed to be set up to produce the precision size it is supposed to deliver.
Any ideas?

Ruth . . . I had not used mine in a long time . . . until a few days ago. Interestingly enough, I had the same problem as you. Until I remembered that the first time you set it up . . . you have to micro-adjust the setup the first time you use it. I did that by setting up the jig and then laying a brass tube in front of the jig and up against the blade. I then readjusted the jig and tightened it down. Then the blanks were cut exactly to the right length.

I hope my wording makes sense to you. Another words, what I'm trying to say is this . . . do not rely on the jig being perfectly aligned by inserting the brass tube in the jig and then moving the jig up against the blade. For some reason, at least for me, the jig has to be set in the correct place by laying the tube on the table in front of the jig with the saw blade down.

Once that procedure is followed and the jig is clamped down . . . you will not need to reset it.

Let me know if you need further clarification. :D
 
It needs to be set back a hair from the blade, they were worried that if it set flush it may contact the blade.I have mine drilled, tapped, and mounted (semi)permanently to the saw.

Now that sounds like a good plan. Hey Ron . . . can you post a couple of pictures of your set up? I want to see what you mean by tapped and mounted. Thanks!
 
Thanks for the help. Al, I will use your method while we wait for Ron to post pictures. Canadian Tire (National Big Box)recently had mitre saws on sale for $49. When the next sale comes up it will be easy to buy one and set the jig up permanently.

One would think they would provide some instructions.

Guess what I will be doing tomorrow :)
 
Myself, I just use a small c-clamp to hold mine in place.

What you do to setup is take 2 brass tubes the same length put one in the jig and set the other on the side that the wood goes. Adjust the jig just a touch longer than what the brass tube is and you got it. I make mine about an 1/8th"+ longer, give me a touch of room for errors.

OH, btw. The pics on the box are misleading. You don't align the jig fence with the blade. Mine sits back about a 1/4" from the blade.

That's exactly what I did and it worked very well. I have a Hitachi cms and I use the clamp that came with it to hold the jig down tight to the saw table.

Once I got it aligned I marked a line with a sharpie on the back of the jig where it aligned with the fence. When I take it off now I just line up my mark and clamp it down. I love mine!
 
Interesting. But begs the question: Why? A foolproof method, without spending money on a jig, is to place the tube between your stop block and blade down, clamp the block and start cutting. That is how I do it with my bandsaw.
 
Ruth: I just bought that jig and what i did was, added a 1/16 to the 7mm brass tube and inserted it in the jig. I then cut the blank and it came out perfect. HTH ya? mikem

I had some alumin arrows and just cut it off
 
I use one on my bandsaw. All I did was mount it to a board and then secured a miter guide to it so it slides in the groove. I thought that mine came with instructions. I set mine to cut the blanks 1/8" long so I could adjust for whatever I need.
 
All good info and thanks. I thought I would be cutting blanks today but it was such a great day I was outside with my chain saw.

I will do what most of you do, just add 1/8".
