Need to purchase a dust collection system. I have a small shop in the basement. I am looking at the PSI dust collector 1.5 hp. Any thoughts on this or any recommendations. Thanks

I have a small basement shop too. I have a dust collector and two air filters one of the air filters I built myself and it actually works very well, they all actually work great.

I like the shopfox line: the stand-alone and the hang on wall. I also have a Rockler hang on wall, but do not find it with much sucking power despite its rating ( i may have just got a lemon). I have a jet air filter. My shop is about 300 sqft.

I would recommend you get at least a 2hp DC with a cartridge filter and use 6" ducting. Anything smaller won't pick up much more than visible chips and only capture some of the too small to see stuff, the worst for your lungs, not all of it. It floats for many hours after you stop working. Open the ports on the machines to take the 6" ducts and if you can't/won't enlarge a 4" one, put a second 4" beside the machine to help scrub the air where you are making the dust. Keep your ducting as short as possible and understand that flex hose has twice or more resistance/drag as ducts do, so use it sparingly. Put some filters over your furnace ducts to keep it from going throughout your house.

I have a Shop Vac which doesn't do much except pick up some of the dust and shavings from the lathe. DC consists of a broom and dust pan then the SV to get the tiny chunks. My air filter is a box fan with a furnace filter held by a bungee cord- works, just leave it on for a couple of hours after I'm done in the shop. Just need to remember to turn it off.

Thanks everyone. I think I Might go with the DustRight.
One of the problems with that style of DC is you are filling the bag/filter with all it collects. This results in less surface area for the filter air to escape from and reduces the CFM performance of the unit as the bag fills. A 2 bag system lets the dust and chips fall into the lower bag leaving the filter bag to filter the air to escape. One of the reasons the canister with pleated filter works even better than a 2 bag system is because the pleated filter has more surface area than a filter bag and allows better airflow.

I've had a couple of different stand alone dust collectors that were 1 1/2 hp, with a Delta being my present one. As far as I can tell they pulled air about the same so I'd assume the PSI would do about the same since it's the same HP. At the present I'm only hooked up to my lathe. I started running ducts to my saws and sander but have yet to finish. I did add an ceiling air filter recently and that's when I noticed a big change in dust collecting(see what I did there? [emoji16]) all over everything. I was lucky I was able to install mine outside under my the stairs along with my air compressor. If there's any way to do something like this you'll love not having to deal with all the noise.
