Since getting a lathe, it has become a hobby to make my own whatever i may need at the moment. It has pushed my mind in directions i didn't think it could go. Because of turning, i have made my own tools, handles, jigs, sleds, beds, tables, washers, mallots, clubs, risers, hinges, pens, etc. etc. etc.
What are some of your proudest "troubleshoots". Hit a snag, realize you are missing whatever tool or attachment you need to do the job, so you have to go into think mode.
Or your "Light bulb" moment. Realize you will be the first person (that you know of) to...
I made a "Tequila" stopper. I had a hunk of Bubinga on the lathe, and was turning one of my very first stoppers. Being NOT a fan of wine, i was kinda burnt on the idea of making "wine" stoppers. I thought about it, and being a fan of GOOD Tequila (whole other thread), i thought about a stopper for myself. I ended up turning a "knob" shaped pressure fit lidded box with no finial or anything on the lid. Then i drilled 5 holes in the lid and added salt. Works like a charm, and is probably 4 or 5 years old now. Granted, i only use it for display purposes, but when i display it, we do use it. I finished the joint on the lid, so it is sticky and has never even thought about coming off.
Still to this day, i have seen stoppers that remove corks, stoppers that pour, stoppers that change sizes, stoppers that do all kinds of stuff... but to my knowledge, mine is the first and only to shake salt!
