I am curious about what other people with Beall collet chuck see for run-out. I just received a Beall from CSUSA and when I put a mandrel into it, I get 0.005" runout where the mandrel just exits the collet. Run-out of the 1"-8TPI chuck body is good (0.001"), but the run-out of the inside taper (where the collet seats into) is 0.004". The collet doesn't want to center with this run-out. As a check, I also chucked the same mandrel into my drill press and measured less then 0.002" run-out.

Does anyone see similar run-out on their Beall?

Dear Lynn,

The problem I have with the chuck is that if that taper and all slots in the collet are not perfectly clean then there will be runout. I have to clean everything thoroughly each time I change collets. That is probably not your problem since you see the runout on the taper itself. Mine measures 0.0015 on the taper. I think I'd call Beall.

Just my 2.

I have two Bealls (one for each lathe) and no runout problems with either of them. But like Bob says, you need to make sure you keep the parts as clean and dust free as possible.

I don't have anything to measure run out but my Beall runs true on both of my lathes. I did find out that a small speck of wood in the threads will set it off a bit so make sure to keep them clean.
