Pressing Plastic Pieces

I have had an issue a couple of times with pressing a place center band into a pen - the most recent was an Apollo Infinity - which while pressing the brass tube scrapes or shaves a bit of the plastic insert. Sometimes I am left with having to use an exacto or something to cut off the excess.

Does anyone have a suggestion as to how to avoid the scraping/shaving? I thought I was being very careful when pressing the pieces.

Debur/chamfer the inside corner of the brass tubes before attempting to press in the components.

When you trim the blank you may be leaving a small burr on the inside of the brass tube, this will catch and shave the plastic. A small deburring tool like this one from PSI will clean this up. https://www.pennstateind.com/store/MSDEBURR.html
Alternatively you can use a small knife and run it around the inside of the tube to remove any burr.

If you go to Home Depot, you will find a deburring tool in Plumbing that does the job nicely, with the plus that it has a nice, easy-to-hold larger handle with a spare blade rattling around inside. I think it is only about $5 or so.
