Good chuck -- Use the cardboard box technique when you get it -


Get at cardboard box with the bottom still in and a spray can of WD-40 or similar. Put the open end of the box over the chuck (pointed over the headstock) and turn the lathe on -- a bunch of oil will fly off onto the box.

Stop the lathe -- spray the chuck and working with WD 40 and turn the lathe back on

Repeat several time to get the swarf and oils out of the chuck. Move the jaws all the way out and repeat.

Wipe the chuck down with a clean cloth and pitch the box.
 
I have one of those somewhere. I used it once. It's a real pain to make adjustments with the bars. You will also have to spend some extra cash to get the extra jaws you will want and need.
After the cost of the chuck and a couple sets of jaws, the Barracuda 2 comes complete and at a better price and the much easier to use chuck key.

I have two of these and I have no trouble with them or operating them.
Congrats Andrew on the thoughtfull gift that you received, enjoy it, you will like it.
Very good ideas Ken I will try them on mine.

You have one and you don't use it? How much would it take for you to be willing to part with it?

Let me see if I can find it. I only have the one set of jaws that came with it.
Might be interested in trading some kits for it. Haven't been able to turn a pen for quite a while. PM me if your up for it.
 
Very nice gloat. I have two chucks, one with bars and one with a single key. I use them both at different times and for different reasons.

Enjoy it. It should serve you well. You will find many uses for it. :smile:
 
I love my Midi. If your lathe has a spindle lock or index pen, you can use just one bar and adjust it easier than with a key. Additionally all Nova accessories fit all Nova chucks. If you have two different sized lathe and chucks, you only have to buy one set of accessories. This Ain't true with other brands.
 
Congratulations, chucks are really nice. I actually have several and they all work well, whether bars or key. You can use the tool rest to rest one bar against and then it is easy to use.
 
I have two of them. One like this and one with the gear adjustment. I keep one set up with the large jaws and the other with small jaws. It is much easier to change the chuck than to change the jaws. All the jaws fit both chucks.

I bought the geared one at Rockler as part of a kit with several sets of jaws. Then there was a shortage of inserts due to a supplier going out of business. I couldn't use it because I didn't have the insert for it. I found one like this on sale at Woodworker's source and bought it because it didn't require an insert, and I had a project that required a jawed chuck.

I don't find the adjustment with the bars to be a big deal. Admittedly the key adjustment is much more convenient, but once you get used to the bars (and can remember which way tightens and which way loosens) they are easy to use. I mounted a magnet on the side of the lathe and keep the bars stuck to it because I kept misplacing them.
 
On the Jet 1014, you don't even need the bars. Lock the index screw and use the knockout tool to tighten or loosen the jaws.

It's really hard to adjust a keyed chuck if you misplace the key. DAMHIKT:)
