A simply way to perfect sanding and finishing techniques use wood dowels. Dowels will allow you to work out any sanding, and application issues. Buy whatever diameter dowels you like and cut to lengths easy for you to work with.
Follow manufacturer's recommendations for sanding, & application for wiping, brushing, and spraying schedule. Pay attention to optimum application temperatures, adjust to actual temperatures you have.
Most of the time sanding sealers considered optional unless you want to seal a stain from topcoat. Sanding sealers: Harden and raise grain fibers so easily cut off with light sanding. Sanding sealers do give little more depth to look and feel of top finish. I use either 600 or 800 grit sandpaper on sanding sealers vice 320 grit often recommended by manufacturers.
Thinned de-waxed shellac makes excellent sealer for most oil and water based finishes. It is true for thinned lacquer too. Many experts recommend using thinned finish as sealer. Commercial sealers easier to use if not comfortable with mixing your own sealers.
