I just did my first powder coating. A .50 BMG cartridge case and bullet in clear gloss.

Both objects were held upright on bolts. The case was facing neck down; the bullet nose up. The middle of the bullet was about as high as the middle of the case.

Starting in the middle of both pieces, the powder coat starts to become kind of speckled in the smooth gloss. This speckling increases until it is a totally matte texture at the neck of the case. The bullet was only moderately speckled at the bottom.

Was this a result of too little powder on the lower ends of my parts or too little time at the higher temperature before reducing the temperature for the cure?

Reducing temp. for cure? Wassat? All kidding aside, I pre heat the oven to 375. Pre heat the part for about 11/2 min., coat, then put it in and leave it for 15 min. at 375. I don't adjust the temp..
When you coat your shell, if you can see brass you haven't put enough on.
It also sounds like MAYBE your oven isn't giving you an even temp. all the way around. I use a big toaster oven I got at Wally World.
Haven't done any 50 cals but it works fine for the smaller stuff.
