My wife just bought a porch swing made of Louisiana cypress. It is unfinished. We were thinking that we would put a neutral stain on it and then seal it against water and sun. Living in Bakersfield, I'm more concerned about sun damage. The people that we bought it from offered to put Thompson's water seal on it for an additional fee, but we declined. I figured that I would just put the Thompson's on myself. Looking at some reviews of Thompson's has made me rethink that strategy. Any suggestions on alternative products that would work well for this?

I live on a lake in brutal South Georgia heat and humidity. From May until October, we get constant 95 - 105 degree days with 85 to 95 percent humidity. Add the lake effect to that and it makes for brutal conditions for outdoor wood, wood boats, docks, etc.

The finish of choice here is CWF (concrete and wood finish) by Flood. On a dock, it will hold up for 5 years. NOTHING else (even spar varnish or soar urathane) even comes close. Thompon's Waterseal is so ineffective here that the stores dont even stock it any more. Thompson's required reapplication every six months.

Flood only comes in three finishes: Clear Gloss, Clear Satin, and Cedar Tone.
On the docks, we reapply ever five years, on the decks every seven years. The last 5 gallon bucket I bought was $75. I think it goes for about $15-20 per gallon.
