I was just reading in the show off your pens "Cactus Statesman" post that for some reason the cactus blanks didn't polish up as glossy as PR. I believe Curtis uses Alumilite (or at least I thought I read he did) Anyway, is it normal for PR to be a bit harder, but polish up glossier?

I was planning on ordering some Alumilite this afternoon to test, so any info would be very helpful.

Mike,

Yes, I use Alumilite. I have never really turned many PR blanks so I can not compare the polish I get with Alumilite to PR. I do know that according to testing information, Alumilite is harder than PR. The Shore D rating for Alumilite is 80 if I remember correctly while PR is 75.

I seem to be able to get a good gloss on my cactus blanks. Not as glossy as a CA finish but still quite nice. Then again, I personally do not like a super high gloss on my cactus pens. If I do want a higher gloss for some reason, I will use CA as a finish.

I use Curtis' blanks but I still put a CA finish over them so I can't say for sure. They turn very smooth though and they don't stink when you drill them but I have never tried to finish them straight.
