Here is a clever idea from Wood Magazine for those who can't keep their fingers out of the chuck. Might take some work to get it sized just right so it only minimally interferes with the use of your chisels; but seems to be worth some consideration.

This link is to a magazine web site that I subscribe to and have an account on the web site. Can't say for sure if this link will work for "outsiders?" If the link doesn't work for you and you are interested, let me know and I will email you the article.

It's often not the front of the jaws that get your hands/finger,knuckles, but the small part of the jaws that are above the diameter of the chuck when the jaws are opened up.

And just why on earth would one put their hand on the jaws anyway ... maybe to stop the turning a second or two faster than normal.

I think this jig would just be another device to get in my way, especially when turning the ends of my stock be it pens or bowls.

Still the concept might have merit for those that just have to touch a spinning inanimate body mangling/killer chuck ...
