ok
i'm curious
I'm considering trying to make an acryllic finish.
I'm trying to get some input regarding melting plexiglass in acetone, so I've got a couple questions.
1.) I assume that if I increase the amount of acetone I use, I'll have a thinner mixture to work with...right? (I'm aiming toward a mixture that would be thin enough to dip with...maybe a smidge thicker than lacquer)
2.) acetone evaporates (allowing the acryllic to cure) so, could I keep the mixture I made in a vacuum sealed container? or would it harden anyway?

Correct. More acetone = thinner mixture

I have had a plexi-acetone mixture in a capped bottle for over a year. It did thicken some over time. All I did was add some more acetone.

I'm not sure you'll get it any thicker than lacquer. Once it reaches saturation you get what you get. I've kept the mixture in a lidded mason jar for several months. I doesn't harden unless the acetone evaporates off and it doesn't (at least it doesn't very fast) in a sealed jar.

BTW, I never considered dipping. DUH! I may just try that since I'm already set up for dipping. Thanks!;)

this is excellent news folks!
My reasoning for wanting an acryllic finish is Russ Fairfields post about finishes. The two strongest are CA (#9) and acryllic (#10). Applying #9 frustrates me to no end, and #10 is the best.....so, I wanna' try it!.

Two more questions....
1.) can I do my "melting" right in a mason jar?
2.) do I have to use acetone? or could I use the acetone free nail polish remover?

You have got to be kidding me. I was just thinking of this the other day! Doesn't surprise me actually. Hello and I are close friends and we always seem to think of the same things at the same time. Kind of scary come to think of it.

babyblues and I are encouraged by this prospect thanks in part to an experiment I did with some of that "acrylic topcoat" stuff that women paint on their fingernails after they apply the paint. I'd acquired a 5oz "bucket o'goop" and tried dipping with it. it went very well....accept for the occasional bubble that appeared (which can happen with lacquer also)....and now....several months later, the finish is still going strong, no cracking, bublings, wearing or anything.
