Plexatone OOPS

Now I've gone and done it again. I mixed up some Plexiglas and Acetone and it came out good, clear and thick. I thinned it down to thin CA and applied it to a cedar blank that was sanded to 600 and washed with Acetone to remove any sanding residue. I applied 20 coats of the mix. some of it turned white and there was one spot that had no finish attached at all. The finish dries very fast. It was applied with high density foam from a clean CA bottle. It would dry nearly as fast as it was applied. What an I doing wrong other than trying something different?

It's been a few years since I used the plexi finish, but I made my mixture with the consistency of 30wt motor oil or slightly thinner. It worked well, but I went back to CA because I didn't have the time to experiment with the plexi finish or give it a real test. Once I get set back up to make pens I will try it again. I didn't have the issues of it fogging or turning white that I remember.

Oh, I applied it with a paper towel, just like a CA finish.

I have mixed proprinate pellets with acetone to make a sealer for waterproofing cedar fishing lures. Propeinate (sp?) are clear plastic of some sort, pellet form and disolve in the solvent. clear finish.
I think I'll make some up and try applying same as the CA.
NOTE to self........Wear Rubber Gloves. acetone verrrrrry bad stuff!!

acetone bad yes! But it is your friend when you ca your figures together.

If your shop temperature wasn't at least 70 degrees, the cold may be what caused the clouds. Plexi is a beautiful finish and is easy to apply IN THE SUMMER.

Even in South Georgia, it tends to cloud in the winter. I'm not completely sure if it is the cold or lack of humidity that causes the problems. When it is 100 degrees and 85 percent humidity outside, it goes on without issue. In the winter, not so much.

Also, I make my working solution just thicker than medium CA. I seem to get better coverage and "lose" less into the foam.

Thanks. Mine was water thin and the temp was mid 60s or so. I'll make it thicker and warmer and try again.

All I use now is plexitone for my finish.
I just apply it with a paper towel folded up to about 3/4" and apply between 30 and 50 coats. It goes on faster than CA so it usually takes about 5 minutes to apply.
I've never had a clouding problem and my shop is heated to 50 to 60 degrees.
