Pizza Cutters for Christmas gifts

I bought these kits from Berea for Christmas gifts for my children (at least the ones no longer living at home!). The handle is removable for cleaning. The kit is pretty heavy and the only complaint I have is that the blade isn't very smooth.

After looking at the photo I notice that I reversed one of the blades. An easy fix!

Are the blades solid stainless, or coated?
If they are solid, could you sand them smooth, and then polish them to shine?

These look like the ones that Berea has had on sale several times recently.

If I remember rightly, they advertised the blades as solid stainless.
