Pith is pen in the hat. They match you up with a partner and you make a pen for that person. Everyone that was in this PITH had to make a pen out of a piece of pine. Then you send it to your partner. This was my first time to do this. They will have another one again just watch for it.
 
Just to clarify... This is a periodic thing, so you can join in on the next one. Each PITH has a theme. This one was to use pine as the major material. There have been some beautiful examples shown!
 
James, I am doing a swap with another member who missed out on the PITH. I will extend the same invitation to you. If you're interested in doing a swap for one of my pens, let me know.

Jeff the theme thing started last year, I want to propose that next PITH we need to use any of the several species of material that contain Urushiol, and since it's easy enough to find all over the world, it should take care of the thing of not costing a lot in material outlay. I liked it better when you just made a pen as nice as you could with what ever a person had at hand, material cost wasn't really a concern. just the quality of the work was all that counted, I've received some beautiful pens over the past years from this forum and from the Australia Day pen swap, and a few others. One was a scratch built out of Stainless Steel I'm not one in favor of Themes. but comply as necessary, it still doesn't mean you can only send the ONE theme pen. And if any one want's to swap pens I'm nearly always up for that.

I can do it as I am one of the lucky 30% but I'll have to leave home to do it. My bride is terribly allergic to the toxin. When one of her cats walk through the stuff and then touch her skin, the itching starts and then the blisters. Ken, me thinks (and I am not qualified to do that) you are trying to start something.

It's almost as fun to say as it is to participate! It's like you're trying to say something bad but have a lisp so it comes out "pith"... "pith pen" "pith partner"... :biggrin: I crack myself up!

Why Charles Do you think I would do something like that!! Me ? Mr kindness and loving my neighbor kind of guy?? it would be far less aggravating than trying to turn a white pine 2x4 into a decent pen, that I wouldn't be ashamed to send to some one I've never met. or even worse a good customer. My only hope is Canada looses it in their mail, No wait can't do that because there was a good pen in there as well. All I have to say is Pith on Pine!!! maybe next time we can try balsa wood or Ivory soap!!

Chris described the dangers of the Urushi finish, I don't think I'm quite to that stage but that's just the finish I want to see a material turned, someone a few years back actually did a poison Oak/or Ivy maybe Sumac pen, so it can be done, I'm like Charles, I can walk through it with out breaking out, I don't know about turning it though. Eh why not you only die one time right??

Be careful that can change. I was always able to do that myself until I was about 46 or 47 years old, then I got into it with my hands (because I always could before) and wow what a comeupance. Then I found that like bee stings you can develop a reaction any time even if you've never had one before.
 
I didn't use to get poison ivy or oak until I made a trip to Canada to go fishing about 8yrs ago. Long story, but I got it BIG time. Now I try to avoid the stuff.

I've actually turned a couple of pens from Staghorn Sumac with no ill effects. But, I wasn't all that impressed with the varying yellow, green lines. Maybe it was just me since they were simple Slimlines. Either way the seller "claimed" they didn't have Urushiol so I bought them. I still have at least one piece 1"x1"x12" and another 3"x4"x12". Not sure what I'm going to do with it yet? If I remember right they were green but it's been pretty hot in my shop so hopefully they've dried some. If I do decide to turn it again I'll probably diagonal cut it to see what comes out. I didn't use any ca for the finish either, just sanded with micro mesh and polished it.
Now that I'm thinking about it.............makes me want to scratch :confused:

Chuck..If you want to do the PITH thing with me I am all for it. We can do the Pine thing or just what you got around. I joined the PITH , made my Pine-Pen sent it to my partner. BUT have not received my pen as yet. Of course it is not due until in July. I just guess I am anxious as it is my first trade-off. Let me know

Sure Mr. Wright! I'm not at all that crazy about turning another Pine pen :eek: but, I will if you want to. I'll send you a PM and, we'll go from there.
