I saw an email today from Micro-Mark with an ad for this: Micro-Mark Pro-Etch Photo Etch System

I hadn't done that since I made my own circuit boards years ago... But looking at some of the things modelers are making with it like the miniature wicker chair. That got me to thinking about what it could be used for with pens.

Anyone done anything like this?

As you mentioned it would be ok for etching flat sheets and curling them around your piece, though not sure if I would like the seam running down a pen.

as for the kit:
I don't like the tank.. it should be tall and narrow
the laminating machine is an unnecessary expense. you can use a household iron to apply photoresist film. check out ebay you can buy it from china for very little $
no exposure unit, its relying on you using sunlight or a lightbulb, and isn't worded so clear to make sure that you buy a uv bulb. I have an exposure unit I use with my printed circuit boards which cost me around $300.00

for what you are wanting to do to try out, you could most probably knock up your own kit for half that.
 
I wasn't thinking the pieces that would totally go around like the filigree sleeves that PSI (I think) had. Wasn't too fond of those. I was thinking more steampunk or small designs like you would do with a laser but on top in metal instead of burned in... Like think taking a iron-clad style blank with no resin yet. Then build up "machinery" on top of it. I think that could make a cool pen. It was just thought. Might let it simmer to a boil for a while
 
I bought the Micro mark kit on sale a year or so ago. It works fine for what you are talking about. Knowing what I know now, I would not buy the micro mark kit. I found using magazine pages, clear packing tape, laser printer and iron to be a much easier way to do things.
