My first attempt at a pepper mill, which I am satisfied with though it looks a bit stumpy to me. It is curly birch from a tree removed from the site of a new fire station near my home. I will try a longer mech next time and trim the diameter a bit. The curl is much more pronounced than in the photo.

Looks like a good first effort!! You might want to take a look at the Crush-Grind mechanisms that CSUSA sells. They are a little more expensive; but have a much nicer grinding mechaniism. I also like the fact that there is no metal nut at the top of the grinder!!

Glenn,
Good Job.. looks great to me. I like it.

I'll second what Randy said about the crush/grind.. much more versatile and forgiving on the lengths and design possibilities.... maximum length on the shaft is 10".. you just cut off what you don't need and smooth the cut with a file or sander.
