I take a spare pen tube that just fits over finished pencil and put the clip on it.
Then place the tube with the clip on it on the pencil to where I want it and slip it off.
I forget where I saw it but it works really well
Taking it off is still a pain

Smart - I might try that technique.

I find getting the clip off the original plastic pencil body is pretty easy - you're not prying it off laterally, you slide it up past the click button at the top and it comes off no problem.

Getting it on the new wooden pen body is harder. I've had good luck with using needlenose pliers as "jaws of life" to expand the clip "wings" and force it onto the wood body, then letting it rebound back to close to its original shape. Works fine for the most part, as long as the diameter of the turned area for the clip is very close to the diameter of the original clip area on the plastic pencil body.
