I always thought that pens for troops was the coolest thing people did for the soldiers, I was wrong. A friend of mine and her husband went to some navy ordered meeting for soldiers returning home from overseas. Each soldier was given a QUILT. These quilts are made by different people/groups, my friend's husband was given his by a group called the Grateful Grannies. These are given as welcome home gifts. Apparently the easiest way to make a soldier cry is to give them a quilt, a hug, and a welcome home. We do what we can for the troops and if we get out done by a group of old ladies with sewing machines I say GOD BLESS THEM.

I'll have to bring this up to my wife. She is a quilt maker and has a group of quilting friends. Could go a "Quilt and Quill" project

I don't think the one has anything to do with the other.

Receiving a gift while on the front line, whether its a pen or other gift, means people back home are thinking of you and its their way of saying, "Thank you for securing our freedom, you're in our thoughts".

The same applies to the quilts, "We're here to welcome you back from your tour and thank you for what you have done to secure our freedom."

Each has its place and each is as meaningful as the other.
