I just received the newest Penn State catalog and saw this 5" disc sander "on sale" for $89.95

I have the identical sander (but a different label) that I bought from Menards on sale for $35.00 ($40 regular price).

Menards.com has the same one SKU # 240-2905 for $39.99. I use it for squaring my blanks and I like it. Menards does ship.

I am not knocking these sanders, but they do rely on two adjacent sides being square. The sanding jigs that Rick Herrell makes (and I have seen others like his) that rely on the lathe axis do not have this "limitation". Many of the blanks we buy are square enough and therefore produce a surface that works just fine. Just something to think about.

I totally agree. I have Rick's jig that I use for squaring blanks on my lathe in the shop. I have a second setup in my basement that I use just for finishing. I made a jig for this sander (similar to Rick's) to keep it perpendicular/square and use it to clean up the CA from the end of the finished blank/tube.

The square that comes with the sander isn't real sturdy so I don't use it.

I generally glue in the tube then turn between centers so the outside of the blank is parallel to the tube. Then I sand the ends square, and am assured that the ends will be square to the tube. This also reduces the amount of sanding required, since I find sanding to be incredibly boring.

I stopped by my local Menards on the way home and picked up their equivalent sander. Of course, I rushed right home and gave it a try. It's a bad idea to use this without some form of suction on the little tube coming out the side of the unit. DAMHIK.
