Tim,

From time to time someone asks this and there are discussions on it. So far as I remember, no one has complained about it (but they could have). The posts usually has comments from several in support of Beall, which is the de facto standard. However, the PSI seems to be very adequate from what I have read.

Others will chime in (hopefully).

I have a Beall, I love it, but it is 70 bucks more than the Penn State one. I'm always just a bit leery of some of PSI's cheapies, but hey, I suppose it depends how long you think you'll use them and of course what one can afford. I honestly have never heard of a used Beall being sold, so doubt that would help you much.

Have you checked the ones out Ebay? I think they are even cheaper, and both are probably made in China. Maybe the Beall is too, I'm not sure. But it's Beall's design, and it's a darn good one.

Good Luck,
Dale

There have quite a few positive comments posted here about the PSI collet chuck and no negative ones that I remember. The design of the PSI chuck that allows it to be loosened and tightened is intriguing; but I have not tried it first hand so I don't know how well it works.

I have a Beall chuck and am fully happy with it; but were I doing it again, I think I would get the PSI.

If you decide that you also want a full set of collets, get the 21 piece metric set from 800watt on eBay. There have been several detailed discussions of this question here. Use the forum search function and plug in "collet" or "800watt" and you will find all of the discussions.

With both sets I see no difference except the knurling on the PSI version. No surprises with the PSI version, my son says it is not as friendly to stray knuckles as the Beall, but that was his problem not mine. I like them both, getting ready to equip another shop and will most likely get another PSI set for it. Have one complete set of collets from 800 Watt and one extra of the basics collets from Beall. Cannot tell the difference between the collets.

PSI Collet Chuck

I've been using one for about 8 months, I have been real satisfied with it. I did buy a set of collets from 800watt on e-bay to give me more flexibility. If I had it to do over again I would buy another one.:good::good::good:

Yes, the collets are ER-32. I also got the complete metric set from 800watt, and it's absolutely a godsend.

I bought a Beall for my metal lathe a few months, and like it so much I'm going to get another for my wood lathe. Good thing is, with a complete collet set now, I only need to get the chuck.
