I make the hole longer then the blank....but I'm thinking that's not what you were really wanting to know about:foot-in-mouth:

You can take a spade bit and grind the desired angle on the sides. Just make sure the leading edge of the sides are out past the trailing edge.

Perhaps the step bit could rough out the hole and the tapered spade bit could clean it up.
