I have a question requesting information on any kit that can be modified to accept a .9mm pencil lead.
Exotics offers Schmidt's .9mm conversion, but I know it does not "plug and play" because the jaws are too
wide to fit in most pen kits. So, the question is, Has anyone found a way to modify any pen or pencil kits
to accept .9mm lead?

If so, will you share your procedure and the equipment you used?

Thanks for any help,

Ed

Ed,

I've added a couple of the 0.9mm ones to my cart so I can try it out on a few kits and will report back on what I figure out. I've been thinking about doing this for some time already. The pencils I use in my office and workshop are Pentel GraphGear 500's that have 0.9mm lead, so it would be good to know what kits I can use instead of buying more Pentels.

Regards,
Dave

Ed and all:

The 0.9mm converters would not fit into any of the Parker style kits I have tried so far without modifications. The threads and a ring around the other end of the converter are too big to fit into the 10mm tubes through the tip and transmission couplers so the modifications will likely need to be made to the Schmidt converter rather than to the pen kit. I will try this one of these days.

So when you say they 'dont fit" do you mean they are too fat to fit in the tube? Or does the end not fit thru the hole in the nib end? Im looking to put a .9 lead mechanism in an EDC click from PSI per the customer request. That pen uses an 8mm tube.

It wouldn't fit into any of the completed pens I have (through neither the hole in the nib or in the transmission ends). This includes the PSI DuraClick EDC. It will fit inside an 8mm tube though. I actually think it would fit inside the DuraClick if I sanded the threads and the little ring at the top end down, but the DuraClick has a goofy little white plastic piece that snaps into the back of a Parker Refill to essentially make the refill longer. I don't know for sure how that would work with the 0.9mm mechanism. - Dave

PS I just haven't fiddled around with sanding or modifying the 0.9mm converter enough yet to see if I can make it work.

Thank-you for your attempts, Dave!! Knowing that something will NOT work is valuable in determining what WILL work!!

Appreciate your effort!!!

Here is a 0.7mm above the 0.9mm. I think the problem areas are the threads and the little ring on the other end. I just haven't taken the time to sand them down and try to fit it back into the kits yet. The only other issue that could come up is related to the diameter of the metal bits around the tip and how well they will fit into a tip/nib. I'm guessing that the tip/nib could be drilled out to make it fit, but I just haven't taken the time to work with it enough yet. (I'm having too much fun casting blanks)! - Dave
