Recently fitted a Hoover Garage Vac to the wall. It feeds a Triton Dust bucket with two outlets, one to the lathe through the rails under the mandrel, second to the front of the lathe under the rails.
Above the lathe is a 10 inch inlet 3000 rpm fan that is vented to a fixed 16 inch vent in the tiles of the workshop roof.
The Triton Dust bucket has a fine filter in the top and I have spares in the event of the suction falling off the Hoover has a red indicator. Then replace the Triton filter and carry on.

Because the above through fan has a soft start the chains do not strain or flex and the air movement is high.

The bench is a convenient sit down one and I use a swivel architects chair to sit at. This alows me to swing around for all turning and assembly functions and dispel CA fumes to the atmosphere.

1. My little 9 X 12 shed is about 6 feet from the neighbor's house in the back and about 7 feet from the one on the side. Both neighbors have babies and the baby's rooms are in the back of the house.

2. I developed a severe allergy to CA fumes and dust about a year ago. The noise from a normal dust collector would be out of the question! But I can't do without the CA finish.

With those two things in mind, I built a small (2 1/2 inch) DC system and encased it in a carpet lined labyrinth. Great little DC and no noticeable noise outside of the shed. Works great!

Congratulations on your ingenuity!

I, for one, would be very appreciative if you were to post some plans or a basic drawing / photos of your setup, sounds very much like what I need.

I took my over-time check for Thanksgiving Weekend (first O/T in years) and got the Jet Canister DC.......cleans down to 2 microns! Got it while it was on sale.....OH.....I got the one with the remote, 650cfm also. Cann't wait for it to arrive!!!!

I don't have picts of it, but I think I can describe it easily enough. I got the idea from some woodworking magazine. Vac/DC housing was designed for basically a 2 1/2 in shop vac. The case was about 24 inches square and 3 feet tall. Lined the top, bottom and side walls inside with carpet squares. Inlet and outlet holes for hose are oversized and filled with carpet. There were a couple of holes at the bottom and top for air flow for cooling.

One side is hinged to take the vac out for cleaning.

Mine was a modification of this for my specific Japanese vac/DC. I actually have mine built into the Lathe/work table (underneath). I also took felt and lined the outside of the hose and taped it on with electrical tape, which allowed some flexibility and stretch that Duct taped doesn't. This did well were bends were needed.

If I can find the link to the picts that I found online, I will post it.

Here is a link that discusses something similar: http://www.clearvuecyclones.com/Bullentin/showthread.php?t=812
That has a link in it but it didn't work for me.

FOUND IT: http://www.rd.com/17685/article17685.html
Scroll down to the second project.
