Many don't realize this, but the external fuel tanks for the space shuttle used to be turned on a lathe at the NASA Michoud complex in New Orleans.
I think it was around 1989 when I was given a tour of the complex, and was amazed to see a metal lathe the size of a house (the tour guide seemed pretty proud in explaining that it was the lathe used to turn the ET's). It looked vertical, and had some sort of ladder to access it. I didn't get close enough to see how it worked, but it was huge.
This thread brought back those memories.
