Does anyone make these for sale? Or something similar? I just can't swing $75 for a pen blank drilling chuck right now.

Which chuck body do you use? I bought pin jaws for my SuperNova (fits all the Nova line of chuck bodies) for about $45 shipped. Love them.

(edit)

Even with them, you'll need to turn "crooked" blanks to cylinders before mounting and drilling.

Oh, I just read further down the article. Sorry that my response isn't related.

Maybe something like this: http://www.woodworkersinstitute.com/page.asp?p=1862 It would mean turning your blanks to round before you bore them.

Bore it to the diameter you want the blank to be after you've turned it round.

Instead of cutting it into thirds, cut it into fourths to fit a 4-jaw chuck.

Put a rubber band or o-ring in the groove shown in the images and let the collet grab the flats on the blank, then chuck it up.

Turn the blank (or just a tenon) round, flip it over and stick it back into the bore of the collet.

Sharon--
I found that same article a year or two ago....that was before PSI introduced their blank "drilling chuck". I made one and used it until about a month ago. I never really thought that drilling chuck of PSI's looked like it was a quality tool. I was wrong, it is great. A friend bought one and I was able to use it and really liked it and recently ordered one.

This "jig" for your regular chuck is occasionally difficult to get all three pieces lined up...depending on the blank...as you tighten your chuck down. It seems like you do not have enough hands. I think this David Reed really hit on something and ABSOLUTELY think it is worth making and using.
I personally think the PSI chuck was based on this design.

I absolutely think turning the blank round and using a collet chuck is the most accurate way to drill, but it really adds to the time and I can really only think of two problems I ever had with this method.

The one thing I may do is make it from thicker stock than he advised---I made it exactly the way he did, then put thicker stock on to the angle brackets. That improved it, maybe not a lot, but a noticable amount.

Good find--go for it--let us know your opinion after you use it.

umm.. couldn't you just leave 2 jaws off on your 4 jaw chuck, and have essentially what they are making/selling? works for me any way.
