the long 1/8" and 1/4" will work on a slimline but a much better value would be the hf transfer punches.

Yes, the transfer punches work well for many things, as well as, pen disassembly. I am always using them for some task or other.

Ok..........so I got those punches, but I do not have a clue as to how to actually disassemble a pen with them. I get the whole "shove the punches through the hole to press on the opposite side" thing. But, how do you get enough grip against the pen to push out the parts? Am I missing something painfully obvious here (probably)?

a glove will help

wearing a latex or nitrile glove will help. also i have wrapped the barrel of the pen with a large rubber band to improve my grip.

This is right ones that work
I also use a 1/4 in. deep socket with a washer that fits snug on tranny to knock it out ,when I need to.Thats a 1/4 inch on the tool end not the nut end. I had one that was cracked and now it stays with transfer punches along with the washer.

i just grab the blank with my hand and start pounding it on the punch sitting on top of the headstock. after a few good raps, it will start to come out, after that i regrip my hand to catch the edge of the blank in my hand. It tends to take a little bit of skin when you do it this way, but it works for me so i deal with it.. besides, it's just skin.. it grows back!
