Okay, so I know that when I have an idea for a pen I put it on paper and work out the design details along side of it. This is what I've always done and I was wondering what others do...? Is there a place on the IAP for design ideas to share with others? Just wondering...thought it would be an interesting question and perhaps allow a stockpile of ideas to be built for others to look at and try.

Here's what you do.
Take a "yellow pad", a piece of grid paper and a mechanical pencil over to the neighbor's house. Ask to speak to Warren, the 14 year old kid with the goofy hair cut, coke bottle glasses, that wears the same stupid T shirt with the political statement that went out of fashion 5 years ago.
Show your "Warren" your design with stick figures and sorta mocked up to scale drawing on the grid paper.
For $20 in video arcade tokens, 5 SpiderMan Comics and a "faked" Stan Lee autograph, "Warren" will design it in 3D, give you CAD drawings and a materials list that includes the "best pricing" for entire project.
OR...you could just slave over your own computer for 6 months

I'll often do just what you do .. drag out some paper and sketch
out what I'm thinking of. But after a while I get repetitive. I take
a lot of time drawing the components, as I'm not that good an
artist. But I'll draw the nib, the clip, the finial and centerband
(if any) as accurately as I can. Then I put an arrow pointing toward
the middle and write "Wood goes here".
Works every time.
(sorry Time .. too close to bed time to think)

Seriously, Tim. There are likely high school kids near you that are studying design, drafting, etc.
The local high school may be able to put you in touch with those students that could use your design as a project, or simply a bright student that a teacher wants to motivate.
I often start with a sketch trying to rough out the concept or because I take a drawing pad with me to doodle ideas on when I have to sit and wait for what ever reason. Then if its a new design I draw it in Rhino 3d. I can draw it to scale, rotate it, or bisect it so I can see the internal dimensions to make sure the refill will fit and where I might have a problem. If Im going to make a lot of the same type designed part just for different tubes and pen sizes I may draw a rough line drawing with places to put in the different dimensions and print out a lot of copies and then fill in the different dimensions.

I designed the PITH pen I made for Ken in Sketchup. I've got another one in me that I'm planning on drawing up once my vacation starts.
Wow! You guys are high speed with the programs and all. When I started this thread I was thinking we could start a place to post design ideas so other turners could flick over to it and say...hmmm, I think I would like to try making that one. "You know, for kids."

I use "show us your Pens" for that.
If I find oh say this great design with scallops,
and I want to use it for inspiration, I do a "print screen" and save it to a file to review later. Ive been meaning to do a segmented blank and this guys pens motivated me to finally getting to it. I go back and review those pictures and others I have saved to aid me in my design.
