Last May my nephew was killed in Afghanistan. I wanted to make a pen and box for his mom (my sister). I made the pen with no problems. I don't make pen boxes but decided to make one out of the same birds eye maple as the pen. It took a while but I was happy with the way it came out.

Then I took it to get it laser engraved. I thought I gave detailed instructions to the guy doing the engraving, thinking he would at least understand resizing images. Well, the following picture is what I got back. It appears he reduced the image size in height but not width. And the spacing of the words is horrible, IMHO.

The guy that did the laser engraving wasn't working so I couldn't talk to him about it. I decided to just flip the box over and do a decal. I will put felt or something on the bottom to cover the mistake. Below is what I did. This shows the exact image I gave the guy. I still have to apply the finish over the decal, but I think it will be more appealing.

My first thought was to sand out the engraving but it is too deep. I hope to have time to take it back to show this to the guy that did the engraving and ask him to explain how this could be overlooked. I got my money back, but if the guy can't see the difference, he shouldn't be doing the engraving.

How would you handle it?

Done venting.

Nice work, can't even see the edge of the decal.
I would take it back and say that this is how you wanted it, demand your money back, because it is not as ordered.:mad:
Let the members know who it was, so that they don't get caught either.
Just my thoughts!!
