I just fried my lap top with water:mad::mad:. Had to get new one, is there a way to get my bookmarks off the hard drive and re install them on the new pc? I bought a holder and cable to transfer from hard drive to new pc which I have captured all my pictures ok but can't figure out how to get my book marks transferred back to fox fire.

Was your old laptop using XP, Vista, or Windows 7 ?

This link covers all of them. You'll have to dig down through the folders until you find the profiles. If there is more than one profile, open the one with the most recent timestamp. If you just want the bookmarks, copy the bookmarks.html file to your new computer into the appropriate folder.

To join the thread; Firefox switched a while back from using bookmarks.html to using a database to store the bookmarks. Recent Firefox versions DON'T UPDATE THE BOOKMARKS.HTML file! I believe but didn't check that bookmarks are stored in an is SQLlite database.

You can set Firefox to make a back up copy in the bookmarks.html file, but you have to go into "about:config" and manually change the key "browser.bookmarks.autoExportHTML" and set it to true.

I had a reason to dig into this a while back and this is what I found.

I stand corrected, from versions 3.0 and above the bookmarks are in the places.sqlite file. Did some more digging and found this, Profile folder - Firefox - MozillaZine Knowledge Base. It outlines how to find the profiles folder in all versions of Windows upto 7. It also describes what each file does/contains and for which versions of Firefox.

Copying the old files and overwriting the new ones should work (make sure Firefox is NOT running), but make a backup (Copy and Paste folder) of the profile folder on the new pc before doing this. If Firefox crashes you can restore the profile folder to original. Even then you may have to uninstall/reinstall Firefox if things don't work properly afterwards.

Note: Exporting the bookmarks using Firefox is not possible in this case. The hard drive from the fried laptop has been removed and used as an external hard drive on the new pc. Firefox on the new pc won't see/look at the old bookmarks.

Last time I did that I just copied the file on the old computer to a usb drive and then put it on the new computer in place of the one that was there.

That was using SeaMonkey (a Mozilla build) and several years ago with an earlier version so I don't know it that would work now or with other browsers. Worth a try, just keep a copy of anything you erase or replace (or the entire directory) so you can put the original back on if it doesn't work.

With drive access you could track down the profiles and move it over or you should be able to browse to firefox.exe on that drive and start the browser. Then go to 'show all bookmarks' import and backup. Backup that browser, move the backup file over to your main drive. Shut down that browser, and open up firefox on your main drive. Go to bookmarks/show all again.. Go to the backup/import and import the file you just moved over.

What browser? If it is firefox, you can find the profile on the old drive and copy it to the new computer. Do a google search for profile location under Firefox in whatever OS you have. If Chrome, you can do the same but it might not work when you do - some people have reported problems. If IE, find the favorites folder and copy everything to the favorites folder on your new laptop.
