Made a paper towel holder with one of my blind students today. Made the base from a really pretty piece of 1x8" curly maple and the upright and tear-off post from walnut. Turned out really nice. I cut a 7" circle from the maple, and drilled and tapped it to fit a wine bottle stopper mandrel. That held it securely to put a pretty shape on the edge. After it was turned and sanded I drilled a 3/4" hole in the center to mount the upright to hold the towels. We turned it from a 2x2x12" piece of walnut. I selected a walnut pen blank to use for the tear-off peg, and drilled a 3/8" hole near the edge to hold it. Finished it with Pens Plus and glued in the post and tear-off with epoxy. He was thrilled to death with it! Unfortunately, he made off with it before I got a picture! But several other turners down there now want to make one, so I will get a picture the next time around.

This was the first thing he had ever turned.
