I saw a link a week or two ago here to a lathe that is on sale on Amazon. The brand is Palmgren, I have not heard of this brand before. The specs look fairly decent, for the price. Has anyone here seen this lathe in person or know anything about them. Your comments are greatly appreciated.

I am looking for a lathe now and did a little research. It seems that they make the lathe for Craftsman and all of the belts are interchangable. They are made in the USA, while they are an old company they just started making wood tools recently. I was scared to buy it when I heard that some of the craftsman lathes flex.

Here are a few threads from Sawmill Creek:

If I had the $ this is a lathe I would have bought.

Chris,

I don't have any experience with their lathe.

I bought their 15" benchtop drill press and 10" bandsaw. I like the drill press. The bandsaw is a little on the light side, but it does an adequate job if I go slow.

Actually, their woodworking equipment is made in China, not the USA. That claim on their web-site is a little misleading. I got that info directly from talking with a sales person at the company. He said that while most of their vises are made in the US, the woodworking machine products are mostly made in China.

Eventually I would like to replace the 10" bandsaw with a Laguna. But that's down the road a bit.

Chris, if you have a limited budget, the Palmgren will give you a lot of bang for the buck. My Craftsman version has served me well for the last two years. The Reeves drive locked up on me once due to saw dust, but we got it all cleaned up and working again. AND, the Palmgren is about half the price. Not bad for a 15" lathe with the power this one has. If you plan on turning bowls and vessels I'd recommed getting the outboard attachment to make turning easier. I'm glad I did.

I checked Amazon this morning and they are saying that the Palmgren is no longer available. They have a smaller/cheaper palmgren with the tube style bed, but that is it.

Two of a kind

Yeah I take a day to check out the quality, all it get is good information and then I go back to order one and find "Not Available". Just my luck. Someday my ship will come in, and I will probably be at the airport.

Well for anyone that is interested I called Palmgren today and they said they have the lathes but they are awaiting final quality control inspection and once they pass this they will be available again. They were not sure how soon it would be though.

Chris,
Did you notice Randy's post about the new Jet lathes that are coming out mid-February? I was looking at this but I just may go with the new jet, especially since the will be on sale. [:D]

Yes I went and looked at them, I am a little torn though. I would like to get a bigger lathe so that I can get into some bowls platters and hollow form turnings that I can't do on a mini, however I do love to turn pens and the indexing well......... time will tell.
