Not related to pen turning at all but these are pretty cool.

I added them to my shopping cart on an order with Rockler. Just a couple of bucks. I used to support the "just finished" side of a piece I was finishing on some screws in a piece of scrap plywood. These are so much easier to position and seem like they have less chance of damaging the workpiece as the points are not as sharp as those of a screw.

I have had a set of these from WC for over a year now and they are great.

One thing though if you are trying to paint the top you need to be carefull as the piece will tend to slip off the things.
 
You could also save those little triangle pieces of plastic found in pizza boxes (to keep the lid from caving in on your pizza)and use them in the shop for painting and staining.
