The other day I posted a picture of the 80 odd pens I needed to turn. What I didn't mention was the nice little disc sander bite I gave myself squaring the ends. Well guess where the boo boo rubs as I turn all these millions of pens?
Yep the tool rest!
Feels sooo good!

I did a 50 order earlier this year - I was whipped at the end! I wish you and your knuckles well!

I built this out of scrap plywood. Plywood disk is on a faceplate. I put the setup on the lathe and line up the "miter" and disk with a Groz square.

You don't even need a motorized sander. You can give yourself a similar boo-boo with enthusiastic hand sanding. DAMHIK. :-(

Looks like road rash. I have an old cheap variable speed belt sander (1/3 hp). Was being too aggressive with something and got my finger stuck between the belt and rest. It stopped the sander and I jerked my finger out. Amazingly, no serious abrasion, but it bruised and was sore for a while. Since then I am very careful.
