Depends on what you plan on casting...clear blanks, translucent blanks? For these the clear works...if you plan on casting opaque colors then you will need the white alumilite. As far as he dyes I would start with basic colors; red blue, yellow...you can also combine these to get some shads of green, purple & orange.
Eugene.
Well, I went ahead and placed my first order. Here's what i got-
Clear 32 oz x 2
White 28 oz. Kit x 1
Metallic Powder 1 oz. Silver x 1
Alumilite Dye 1 oz. Black x 1
Alumilite Dye 1 oz. Red x 1
Alumilite Dye 1 oz. Yellow x 1
Alumilite Dye 1 oz. Blue x 1
Just don't get upset when you check out the black, it is a lot thicker than the other colors. To use it, just stick a popsickle stick in, just a little bit goes a long way. The thick black is normal, but it catches you off guard at first. Good luck with casting.
You can also thin the black just a little with mineral spirits. I asked Mike about it and he suggested this and it works great. He recommend odorless mineral spirits so that it would not possibly impart any smell to the finished blank. I thinned mine so I could transfer it into empty CA bottles so I could count drops for the mix I wanted.
Good advice guys, and perfect timing. I just arrived home from work to find that the order arrived from Alumilite! It looks like tonight I will try my first casting!
The other option to thin the Black dye is use some of your A side. The dyes are all reactive ... meaning they are originally dispersed into a very low reactive polyol. So as long as you use the A side (our polyol side), it will not react until it is mixed with the B side. Then you don't have to go source odorless mineral spirits or worry about cutting it too much since the mineral spirits are so watery.
Does anyone know what the difference is between Alimilite Clear and Alumilite Crystal clear? Which is the best for making pen blanks? I'm getting ready to place my first order after reading all about casting and didn't see this issue discussed in any of the posts. Thanks, Rudy
Crystal clear is a new version of Alumilite water clear that Mike just came up with that uses a different, even safer catalyst. It was mainly created for fishing lure makers. I am currently doing some testing for Alumilite on a version of the Crystal Clear that looks promising for pen makers with potentially better polishing capabilities. There will be more information coming soon!
