If your budget will allow, upgrade to this one:

as it comes with more jaws, and you'll find the key much easier to use than the tommy bars, especially when trying to mount a heavier blank. I have the chuck I mention, and have been quite happy with it.

The 3418 was my first too. It is an "OK" chuck but the method of tightening the jaws in a real PITA. Since my wife needed a chuck to call her own we went with the csc3000c that has been talked about at length here lately. Needless to say, we are very happy with the new one.

Best price on the chuck was from Amazon.com. You can leave money in your wallet for the same product (3000C in a case is a nice thing).

I agree with Ken. I purchased the 3000C from Amazon.com and it came in a PSI shipping box.

I really like it.

The upgrade is definitely a better chuck and may be a better value. But don't let the tommy bars throw you. My chuck uses tommy bars and is, IMHO, not a nuisance. The key is nice but the issue is very minor.

I had one of these (let it go with my old lathe) and have two Barracudas. I've not had a problem from any of them. Great chucks! I had a SuprNova2 that I had to send back b/c of runout. Just shows that anyone can have QC issues, but for twice the money I expected perfection.
