I just noticed the inquiry about open grains in non-stabilized blanks. While we're on the subject, I am running into stabilized blanks having small open grains. I thought I could clean the blank thoroughly, use CA, and sand it down and repeat as necessary. What resulted after buffing (with white diamond) was a very inconsistent finish in which CA filled areas were much shinier than the balance of the pen. Did I sand the CA coating too much? not enough? Did I miss something in the final buffing process? Your advise is valued and appreciated.

Thanks,

Jim

Jim, it sounds like to me that you answered your question. [:)] I think you sanded off the CA on the surface of the blank, leaving only the CA in the open grain. Clean it up, and do your basic CA finish of the entire blank and you should be much happier.

Yep, that is exactly what happened to you. Polishing the much harder - almost a glass like surface - CA will always shine much better than the rest of the wood. Slightly rough up the entire piece a bit and refinish with a complete coating of CA. Avoid the CA accelerator and let it set up on it's own and then sand and polish as usual. [:D]
