So I have a blank on my lathe now that had 3/4 of the lower barrel blow out completely into 100 pieces. So I scraped it down to the brass except for about a half inch of the original blank, sandwiched on a contrasting thin piece and it's now drying with a new lower 3/4 blank of a different wood.

Nothing like a little emergency segmenting to recover a work in progress

An oops ring or in this case an oops band. I have had a lot of experience with that practice. You get a real feeling of accomplishment to nail one of those.
I am looking forward to seeing the end product as well.

LOL...I did the same thing last week. I was experimenting by making a pen out of VCT flooring. I got about 10 seconds away from being donw shaping getting ready to sand and the last 1/4" blew out.

I grabbed some corian scraps off the shelf and back in business.

I'm glad that you were able to fix it to your satisfaction.

Personally, I hate 'oops bands' as they never really look right to me. Therefore, if I blow out a blank, I either trash it or replace the entire blank with a matching one, depending largely on the material in question.
