I cleared my cookies, and was required to log in again. I noticed that there was a big Salvation Army advertisement on the home page. Got me thinking that I should put a plug in for the bell ringers. Here's why

My dad seldom passed a salvation army pot without putting something in it. I finally asked him why, because I personally found the bell ringing annoying and an intrusion. He said when he was in Vietnam he flew into somewhere on his way to the next assignment grungy, tired and weary. Every GI that got off the plane was offered a cup of coffee and a donut by the red cross for the low price of a dollar. The Salvation army gave them a cup of coffee and donut for free. He said that little kindness made all the difference. I seldom pass a pot without putting something in it and those bells aren't an intrusion.

Most of the charities sit in a nice warm office and telemarket.

These people are interested enough to stand in the cold and be pleasant---they deserve SOME acknowledgement of their dedication. If you can afford a donation, great!! If not, at least say "Hello, and thanks for your efforts!!"

The Red Cross in Florida, turned me down for help, I had been in the hospital in Key West, My wife and new baby were with me. A Navy Dr. in the hospital done some things and I was able to go to my next duty station. (Paid travel)
My wife and I attended the Salvation Army church in Ridgecrest, Ca before I moved to Blackfoot, ID.
I will be sending pens for their auction next Feb. All for a good cause.

My Father always puts something in the pot. When asked he said," Because these people really do make a difference."
In the town in Alaska there was no red cross and the salvation army handled disaster relief and never asked for anything in return.

:eek: Inside information !! Some of the Red Cross workers that go to help out in emergencys, get paid double time or more to go there. Not all !!! There are some good people that work for the Red Cross that give their time and support freely, with nothing asked in return. A few years back when it was found that the chairman of United Way lived in a million doller house and drove a Rolls Royce, it gave me a whole new meaning to the saying " Charity begins at home ". All my donations go to the Salvation Army or the Humain Center. Happy Holidays !!! Jim S
