This is a burl (?) a coworker gave me. I think it has been sitting out too long as it is pretty beat up but I am hoping to salvage something from it. But I am trying to figure out what it is. He thought it might be cherry but I am wondering if it isn't walnut. It did come from a tree in my part of Ohio. Thanks again for your help.

Rob,

You clearly have TOO much unidentified wood.

Send that piece to me and your problem will be solved--it will then be "GONE wood"!!

I'll send you a pen from it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Rob, have a Qsn. once you find out or if you have to resort to cutting it. How do you go about cutting or slicing it to make it to flat pieces so you can cut blank out of it. I like to learn, please. since it looks all type of shape and no flat part to start with. Or, how do you decide that which side or how to orient it to the saw blade so you can get the best profile or figure in the slab?

Absolutely is walnut, looks to be hollow. That rotten limb will go all the way through. You will get some nice figure, but it is not a burl. It's sometimes called an overgrowth as the tree sent lots of cells there to repair the rotten section. It will be easy to work, and great colors. Congrats!

Depending on the size of the 'burl', or, 'overgrowth', I would make a bowl out of that portion and blanks out of the rest of it. I always try to cut the biggest piece I can from the 'source' and then blanks for pens or pepper mills from the rest.

If the largest part is a candidate, I would use a bowl saver and then make pen blanks from that saved part. Just my 0.02 worth.
