My wife and I volunteer at a local living history/historic park here in Utah. Naturally, I went to work in the furniture shop
It was a pleasure to use the old tools, especially the old lathes. I decided to show some pictures of the two lathes in the shop.
The first is driven by a rope to the headstock. The drive wheel is turned by an apprentice (when he gets tired, it makes it a variable speed lathe
). They had it set up by the front window. I've turned some spindles and candlesticks with it. Visitors enjoy turning the big drive wheel.
The other is a large treadle lathe. It takes quite a bit of effort to pump it.
They sure make me appreciate turning on my lathe at home with just a flick of the switch!
