I'm not trying to finish any oily woods right now, but I've been reading several posts lately about finishing troubles and got to thinking. Is there any reason why one couldn't use an oil based finish (tung oil, BLO, danish oil, etc.) and just rub it into the wood. The wood would be protected, but would the finish hold up over time?

The problem with an oil finish on some oily woods is that the oil in the wood prevents the oil in the finish from curing. Lacquer is a much better choice for oily wood.

Hat in hand!

Russ Fairfield is my go to guy for wood turning matters, and I use his method for applying CA. So I'm nervous to follow his thread.
I just finished a pen of one of the oiliest woods I have ever used, Thyua burl. I usually soak this kind of wood in acetone overnight, but this time I decided to try something new. I decided to apply the CA oveer the blank right then, and so far it is working. The differance is most likely the fact tat it is not an oil based product and like laquer, CA is a chemicaly cured finish.
