I've been look at purchasing the Nova DVR XP and noticed the Nova 1624-44 went on sale. Anyone have experience with both and prefer one over the other?

I had the 1624 and it is a very good lathe. However if you have the money the DVR is the one I think you would be most happy with by far. The variable speed is worth the extra money I would think. But then again, if I had the money to buy the DVR, I think I'd look at a Powermatic.

I had the 1624-44 and after a year I had enough of changing belts and added a 2 hp motor and V S drive and loved it. It was a great lathe and I swung some 22" bowl on that baby. Go for the DVR

I know a couple people that have the DVR XP. IF I could afford one, it is the one I would get and I'm sure I'd never need another one!

I don't know ALL of the Nova Lathes that have been made, but I do know that I've never seen or used a bad one!

If I consistently made projects bigger than pens, the Nova would likely be my purchase. They sure seem like lots of lathe for not lots of money.

I just bought a Nova DVR XP in May and if you have the option I would go with it rather then the other. The variable speed is really nice and it has no vibration and is so quiet.

I have a Nova DVR and am very happy with it.

I was looking at the speed ranges on the 1624-44 and see that it skips from 360 RPM to 904 RPM. On the DVR, I do most of my large bowl turning at 500 and 750 RPM and only occasionally go as high as 1050 or 1250. That's a pretty bug jump in my opinion.

That said, quality would be excellent and it has all the other Nova features.

Hi have the Nova 1624-44 since 2008 and at the time I would have the DVR if wasn't for the big price differences, (even more then, than now...!), I have no complain about the machine capabilities however, I never liked the constant belt change process, particular for me that I do so many types of turnings so, speeds have to be changed all the time and that really, bugs the hell out of me.

I don't think that I will ever own a new complete DVR but considering that, apart from the head/motor, everything is exactly the same on both machines, I may try to save and buy a new head the DVR XP one and, that will cut the cost considerably and also allows a spare head (original one) if something goes wrong with the new one where, weeks are "usually" lost before the problems are resolved...!

My suggestion is, DVR XP no doubt...!

Cheers
George

I have the older Nova DVR 3000. Really a fantastic piece of machinery. You can run it either 115/220 v with just a change of a single pin on circuit board. I don't have 220v setup in my shop so I switched mine back to 115v. That electronic speed control sure does spoil you.
